Improving lives & preventing deforestation through clean water access

When communities do not have access to clean water they boil water by using wood or charcoal with general deforestation as a consequence.

The context

A project for the people of Rwanda with the people of Rwanda

Spadel, Water Access Rwanda, CO2logic and mkaarbon safari develop this climate project to provide safe drinking water to communities in the districts of Rusizi, Ngoma, Rwamagana and Bugesera (Rwanda). By providing boreholes, by restoring non-functional boreholes and wells households have access to clean water.

This reduces the need for wood & charcoal (deforestation) the main energy source used when households need to boil water as a means of purification.

The Program

The Water For Climate project addresses daily challenges on different levels

Environmental benefits

Reducing firewood/charcoal consumption for boiling water.

Preserving forests and biodiversity

Avoiding soil erosion and water run-off

Social benefits

Saving time for women and children since no fuelwood for water purification has to be collected and boiling of water is not needed anymore. This frees up time for e.g. income generating activities and education.

Reducing the incidence of water borne diseases like e.g. cholera, diarrhea, typhoid fever or Hepatitis A/E.

Avoiding indoor pollution coming from smoke and particulate matters when boiling water, hence benefiting mostly women being the ones in the kitchen

Economic benefits

Provides employment in the rehabilitation, maintenance and monitoring of the boreholes/wells

Decreasing fuel costs allows households to spend more money on e.g. health care, nutrition, education

SDGs & MAIN CO-BENEFITS

sdgs

The Water For Climate project contributes to many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as No Poverty, Good Health & Well-Being, Clean Water & Sanitation, Decent work & Economic growth, Sustainable Cities & Communities, Responsible Consumption & Production, Climate Action, Life on land & Partnerships for the goals.
